The Closest of North Texas Wineries: Hidden Hangar
This estate existed previously as a small airport, hence the name. Only open Thursdays through Sundays, sit on the patio or in the lounge and sip on cabernet franc or sauvignon, syrah, riesling, or petit Verdot. If you like, sign up for a grand tour of the winery—or more unique, the winery equipment tour.
Charitable Outposts: Fitzel Winery
When owners became bored with their farm, they experimented with growing grapes and creating wines on their land in the Texoma AVA. Now, they’ve made wines with bold flavors, and some even for a great cause. The Andy’s “Gramps” Red has hints of tobacco, caramel, and leather, and $2 of each bottle purchased goes towards the Alzheimer’s Association. Likewise, Sam’s White has hints of green apple, pear, and apricots, and $2 of each bottle purchased goes towards dog charities and animal shelters. Although you can visit this North Texas winery for more than vino: they offer unexpected food options like beer-brined chicken wings, a burger, grilled cheese, and more.
