The local land was originally founded by Native Americans. Settling north of the Shawnee Trail, which became one of the great cattle drives. Pottsboro was established in 1876 by James A. Potts. He was a pioneer settler who donated land so that Missouri, Kansas, and Texas would extend its tracks westward. The cattle drives began in the 1850’s. Settlers who decided to stay versus people that passed through formed the community of Pottsboro. The cattle drives ceased in the 1870’s.
